It was very uncomfortable to see my colleagues partying and I felt left out. This was the first time a birthday was celebrated. At that point, the other team left and my team continued with our meeting. I muttered “no” and kept myself busy checking email until my colleagues were done with the pie. At one point someone jokingly asked if they should describe the cake to me because I couldn’t have one. My colleagues enjoyed the cake and chatted while I watched. The person with the cake announced that they were celebrating the birthdays of two colleagues, one on their team and one on my team. I was surprised to see members of another team enter the conference room. At a recent meeting, my colleagues were gathered in the conference room. I have attended regular team meetings via phone or video conference for years because my work location is more than three hours away from our regional office. Let them eat cake, but leave me out of it † Please include your name and location, or a request to remain anonymous. Send questions about office, money, careers and work-life balance to workfriend.
